'What's Bruin?' Asks Bear
Trained To Ride Lightweight
“Look, Ma, if he can ride one, I can
too!” This is very likely to be the de-
lighted exclamation of many a young per-
son who sees “Snookums, the Himalayan
Wonder Bear” doing his stuff on a Harley-
Davidson 125 motorcycle. This furry little
guy was trained to ride by Emil Fallen -
berg, Sr., veteran bear owner and trainer
of Clinton, Conn. Mr. Pallenberg has
worked with three kinds of bears —
grizzlies, Caucasians and Russian bears.
The first bear he taught to ride a motor-
cycle was “Fu,” a peppy grizzly. Now
“Snookums” holds the limelight with his
lightweight cycle tricks.
Pallenberg has owned and trained bears
for 42 years, and is especially noted for
his bicycling bruins — bears that ride by
themselves. One day his wife said, “Emil,
you do anything with bears. Why don’t
you put one on a motorcycle?” So he did,
and his bears have been pleasing children
and adults alike in rollicking bear acts at
sportsmen’s shows, parks and fairs. For
13 years, the bruins performed with the
Barnum and Bailey circus. These edu-
cated bears have also been seen in sev-
eral movies, and on the stage.
