Little 135 lb. Leroy Winters of Fort
Smith, Arkansas, lived up to the name
of "Arkansas Traveler” as he traveled over
the rugged 70 mile enduro course to win
the Handlebar Derby event on a swinging
    arm 165 Harley-Davidson to outclass a rec-
ord field of more than 80 riders with a score
    of 971.
Pathfinders Bruce Walters and son Bob
who laid out the course made sure that
none of the riders would be anxious to re-
ride the course this year as some did last
year. They proved their point as only 30
tired and weary riders made the finish and
many of these were ready to call it quits
long before the finish came. Just about every
rider claimed it was tougher than any Jack
Pine event they’d ever been in.
The 70 mile course covered dry sand
trails that varied from six inches to a foot
deep, through rough Palmetto fields and
rugged swamp lands that kept the boys con-
stantly maneuvering and wore them down
just keeping both wheels on the ground.
Some of the boys tired so quickly in the
deep sand that they were occasionally scoop-
ing up a mouth full of the gritty white
    stuff.
The hot-weary riders were treated to a
couple of welcome spots along the course at
water crossings in the swamp lands which
were just about knee deep. A boot full of
the cool water was really refreshing and
just what they needed to give them that
added bit of encouragement to reach the
finish. They all agreed this was the best
    part of the run.
As many of the riders agreed, it was tough
and the scores will show trophy winners
won with as many as 272 points off for
    the 70 mile run.
Pathfinders Bruce and Bob deserve a pat
on the back for the fine run but looks like
they will have to make it a longer run if
any more riders attend next year’s or the
first rider will be coming in when the last
    ones are leaving.
