    Rees Wins Ohio State
    Dirt Track Championship
DDN Rees of Dayton beat out Bobby
Hill, four-time winner of the Ohio
State championship, in the last few laps
to become the new Ohio dirt track cham-
pion. Pete Knight took over the lead in
the first turn but two laps later Rees mov-
ed ahead to lead through the tenth. Hill
who had been in there close took over for
the next eight laps. Rees dogged Hill con-
stantly and made several attempts to pass.
Finally his combination worked, he grab-
bed the lead on the frontstretch and held
on to the finish. Knight and Dick Klam-
foth finished third and fourth, respective-
ly, but these two rode such a furious race
it was like two seperate events.
In the expert final Al Gunter of Monte-
rey Park, Calif., put on a thrilling and sen-
sational ride. Bill Tuman broke into the
lead which he held for 13 laps but Beck-
man and Golds nith were forcing him
every foot of the way. About the halfway
mark Gunter moved into third place and
then on up behind Tuman. Going into the
fourth corner he managed to get in under
Bill who went wide, and by the time Bill
had recovered both Gunter and Goldsmith
were passed and on their way. Gunter went
on to win but Goldsmith made him do
    his best.
    George Roeder of Monroeville, Ohio,
had no trouble at all winning the amateur
final. After he passed Steve Haban of Co-
lumbus in the first lap he continually in-
    creased his lead each lap.
In the novice final, Sam Machine of
Dearborn, Mich., took the lead and held
it all the way bur Bill Otto of Chicago
made him really work. Riding wheel-to-
wheel Otto time-after-time would pull up
along side coming out of the second and
fourth corners but Sam always managed to
pull away until the winning flag fell.

    Attracts 100,000th Race Fan
During the month of September the
100,000th motorcycle patron of the season
walked through the turnstiles of Gardena
Stadium in California, according to Race
    Promotor Bill McKay.
McKay reports the biggest crowds in
Off the groove, Little Al Gunter looks anxiously over at Everett Brashear as he
strives to bring his BSA back on the track from a gigantic overslide in the first ex-
pert heat. Al went on to win the expert final after a tough dual with Paul Goldsmith.
