1957 Greenhorn Enduro / Eddie Day / Triumph - 2-Page Vintage Motorcycle ArticleAMATEUR RIDER Eddie Day really
had his “Day” in the June 1-2
Greenhorn Enduro, winning both
Sweepstakes and Class B with his Tri-
umph TR/6. Topping 250 entrants in
this popular annual Southern Califor-
nia endurance run, Day emerged with
953 points—four points more than run-
ner-up Ralph Adams, who headed the
Open Class and Class A with 949
points. Triumph Dealer Adams was
also astride a TR/6. In fact the TR/6
format in recent major sporting events
was also "tailor-made” for the Green-
horn, with many of the finishers riding
the popular 40" competition models. In
fact, of the 55 finishers, 26 of ’em were
riding Triumphs.
Frank Heacox, dealer-partner with
Ralph Adams, proved that a light-
weight is also a top contender in this
type of event by bringing his 200cc
Triumph Tiger Cub home to 9th place
in the Open Class, with 926 points.
As in the past, the two-day run
started and finished at Johnson Motors’
showroom, who had the welcome mat
out for competing riders and crews.
The desert heat was a bit more than
anticipated by many riders and the toll
was heavy across the barren stretches.
Overnight stop was in the High Sierra
Mountains, which was a cool and re-
freshing change from the desert runs
sandwiched on each side of the stop-
over.
However, Jack Pine Champ LeRoy
Winters had no trouble negotiating
the arid desert nor the rugged moun-
tains, for he jockeyed his little 165
Harley-Davidson into first place in
Class A 175cc with 898 points—being
the only finisher in the class.
Last year’s Greenhorn Champ Cal
Brown wasn’t too far off the winner’s
pace this year. He topped Class A 500cc
with 941 points on his Ariel.
The event was sponsored by the
Pasadena Motorcycle Club.

Triumph is a TR/6 model. This was Eddie's first
major victory—and a championship title at that!
An amateur beat the experts!
JACK PINE CHAMP—Arkansas' LeRoy Winters
found the California desert to his liking and
took top honors in Class A 175cc finishers with
his Harley-Davidson 165 (on which he won
last year’s Jack Pine Run).
