Drag Race Championship At
Wichita Falls June 7-8
Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8,
Wichita Falls, Texas, will be host to some
of the most wierd combinations of two
and four wheeled vehicles in the sport of
drag racing. This will be the Southwestern
and Rocky Mountain !4-mile Drag Racing
Championship for motorcycles to be held
in conjunction with the Southern Invita-
tional National Hot Rod Association Drag
Championship for automobiles.
Site of the event will be the beautiful
new Red River drag strip located six miles
west of Wichita Falls on highway 287 and
two miles north on Farm to Market Road
#369. This new strip is not "war surplus,”
but an all new 3500 foot paved asphalt
strip designed and built specifically for
drag racing. The 60 ft. wide ribbon was
privately financed by interested business
men of the Wichita Falls area for use by
the drag enthusiasts in North Texas and
Southern Oklahoma.
The strip is operated by the Red River
Timing Association, an organization made
up of hot rod clubs in Wichita Falls. The
very latest in timing equipment, public
address system, and other facilities are
being readied for the big championship
event.
The championship motorcycle event will
cover entrys from nine states: Texas, Okla-
homa, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas,
Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. The
two-day program will start at 8 A.M. on
Saturday with entrys received until 12
noon. Time trials and a parade through
downtown Wichita Falls will start the day
with record runs being scheduled in the
afternoon. Sunday morning, motorcycle
eliminations and Sunday afternoon, auto-
mobile eliminations. The top eliminator
motorcycle will then get a chance to com-
pete against the top eliminator automobile
if his "elapsed time" is among the top six
fuel and the top six gas burners.
The sanctioning club for the event is
the Time MC of Wichita Falls, Texas.
Entry blanks are available from them at:
P.O. Box 578, Wichita Falls, Texas.
Peterson's 987 Score
Wins Eagles' Road Run
As the second annual Daylight Savings
Time Road Run started, the sun shook
itself loose from the clouds to shine on.
the 33 entries who braved the cool riding
weather in Minneapolis, Minn., when the
Northern Eagles MC sponsored their an-
nual event.
The riders departed from the Eagles’
clubhouse at one minute intervals to set
forth on 73 miles of back road riding on
a 35 inph average. The rule book says a
road run is anything passable in a car, but
some of the contestants were wondering
what kind of a car Jim Webster drove to
lay out the route. Many sections were
freshly filled in with loose sand where
winter had left its trademark of frost boils.
"Tough luck” rider of the day was Don
Couture who blew a rear tire and parked
his Indian in a slough, with his wife and
baby in the sidecar.
After the five check sheets were in,
Lyle Peterson, with the help of his girl
and his 250 Zundapp took first place
trophy with a total of 987 points. Ken
and Bernadine Trapp rode their new Duo-
Glide into second place with 985 points;
Milford Waye lost 17 points riding a 250
Maico for third place trophy, and Ken
Walker pushed his 250 Zundapp into
fourth spot with 980 points.
