DUAL ENGINES/DUAL PURPOSES
In the November issue of CYCLE
WORLD we reported on the achieve-
ments of Rudy Garcia, and L. W. Water-
man at the recent Bonneville speed trials
where they rode their twin engined machine
to a speed of 164.985 mph. We followed
their progress back to Claude Salmon’s
cycle shop in Alameda, Calif, where the
twin engined monster was built, to find
Garcia and Walter Ross, builders of the
Harley double-threat, preening it for even
further accomplishments.
Details of the bike include; twin 1947
Harley-Davidson 74’s, bored to 80 cubic
inches each, mounted in modified Harley
frames of the same vintage. Total weight
of the bike is 640 pounds, compression
ratio of the engines is 11:1, pistons are
M.C. hi-dome forged alloy, fuel is alky-
methanol and special Avon high speed
Bonneville tires are employed.
The AMA class A A machine, 3.000cc,
has turned 127 mph (11.40 elapsed time)
at the Fremont drag strip and 126.40 at
the Half Moon Bay strip with a 10.49 e.t.
We are told that the builders, well known
in the Northern California area, are not
through tuning and changing the beauti-
fully finished machine so we can well
expect to see big things for this unusual
double purpose bike. •

Bonneville.
One of the 80 cubic inch H-D engines. Note
absence of cooling fins on special barrels, not
necessary when burning alcohol based fuels.
Garcia hard at it on the beautifully built special.
