    Rigid except for the scant spring in
    a homemade springer, and a seat
    barely a half inch thick including the
    upholstery, and hard as a board, isn't
    most wick winder's idea of The Great
    Green Pleasure Machine, It's more
    like a modern version of the rack.
    Not so to Bob Van Deusen He built
    The Rack the way it is because that's
    the way he wants it. And the pancake
    thin seat is not some vague-reason
    custom styling for looks alone. Bob
    rides his scooter almost every day. In
    fact, he is a confirmed long-distance
    hauler, frequently solo.
    Last summer Bob heard that the
    Mexican border officials were turning
    long hairs back at the border. He has
    shoulder-length tresses and an imme-
    diate dislike for anyone drawing con-
    clusions based on hair length. Without
    a word to anyone, Bob forked The
    Rack and made it all the way to the
    border at San Ysidro. That's about
    1200 miles. True to their rumored
    reputation, the Federates turned Bob
    back. His mission accomplished. Bob
    putted on back to Portland with hardly
    a stop for food or sleep. That's how...
