THE COOLER OIL
The new road machines released by the factories
in the last few years have been powered by sophis-
ticated, multi-cylinder, multi-valve engines. In line,
double overhead cam, super high performance
engines that were only seen on road courses are
now commonplace on the streets. These modern
power plants have a lot more moving parts than their
predecessors. More moving parts mean more areas of
friction and heat build up. Multi-cylinder engines
develop internal heat problems, especially in the
middle cylinders where air cooling is not as effective
as in the outer cylinders. Excessive operating tempera-
tures can overheat engine oil, causing oxidation and
power-robbing varnish build up, or worse, oil break-
down which causes wear and breakage of internal parts.
Because of these oil overheating problems, the
oil cooler has become a popular accessory for reduc-
ing engine oil temperature. In fact, on several of the
new super bike models, an oil cooler comes as
standard equipment right from the factory.

tions MIL-L46152, API Sen/ices SB, SC, SD, SE, CA,
CB and CC. Bel-Ray EXP is available in 20W50 for use
where SAE 20, 30, 40, 50 or SAE 10W40, 20W40 or
20W50 is recommended. EXP 60W is specifically
designed to meet the requirements of
Harley-Davidson motorcycles. For all out competition
engines, Bel-Ray 4-Cycle Racing Oil (MC-5)
is recommended.
