Candy Jackson of San Leandro,
California was after one thing
when he delivered his ’71 Honda
4 to Billy Budde’s Customs, an "Eye
Poppin* *' street worthy bike with that
little something extra. Well, as you’ve
surely witnessed in the past Budde puts
something extra into everything that
comes out of his shop and Candy’s bike
proved to be one more in a long line of
exceptional customs.
The project was started from scratch
with virtually everythng being designed
and fabricated especially for Candy’s
bike. Keith Lacey was put in charge of
the sheet metal fabrication and along with
Billy and other talented hands from the
shop created “Candy’s Toy." Keith first
fit a blank engine into one of Budde’s
chrome moly rigid frames featuring a
slight stretch and a total rake of 43 de-
grees. Next a custom oil bag was designed
to hold 3 quarts of oil and the stock elec-
trics. The tank was fabricated to sit out of
harms way between the frame tubes. This
design was such an immediate success
that Budd now offers the tank known as
the “Force" oil bag as an over the counter
item. The sleek overall lines of “Candy’s
Toy” come from the one piece aero-
dynamically styled fiberglass body and
interchangeable steel fender and tank
combination. The removable pieces allow
the bike to take on a whole new look in a
matter of minutes, just remove four bolts
and slip the new body panels into place.
The “Force" body is one of Budde’s more
popular accessories and each is hand laid
at the shop. The body, frame and
fender/tank combo were handed over to
Gary Elmore for molding and final paint
preparation. The finish on both pieces is
the extraordinary work of Paul Moura and
Bob Standing. These two painters are in
big demand in the Bay Area and the
work on Candy’s scoot is a good example
of why they are so popular. The finish is
acrylic lacquer in lavender diamond dust
with darker tones of candy overlay. Art
work found on the glass body is
entitled “The Invader.’’ Paint on the
steel fender and rocket style tank is set
off with intricate leaf work and striping
and swaps names to “Lady's Choice."
Final finish on the engine which was
entirely built by Budde features heavy
engraving by Rudy Pena and flawless
gold and chrome plating by Ralph at
Action Plating in Oakland
Now you may not believe this but
Candy putts this creation on an
average of three days a week switching
from one body style to the other. Some
street ride!
